My previous work has been conveyed through photography and large format prints until recently when I felt it was time to be more a part of my work, physically and emotionally.
Charcoal, pastel and wax are what I use for my work. I love the stark contrasts of using black charcoal on white paper with the application of wax which both preserves and adds another dimension of colour and translucency.
I have called this series of works ‘Monolith to Dialogue’.
I prefer to use the body as subject matter because it is the most challenging of subjects and yet the most expressive form through which to convey the futility of dialogue to convey the human condition. Words are made up from letters in a dictionary and strung together in order to create dialogue, to express, to convey, to communicate. I prefer the silence, the absence of words. I want the body and the form to speak ‘the dialogue’.
Why do I use my self as the subject matter? I am the ‘Monolith’. ‘Every man is a rock unto himself, there is no one else, and we are all singular in this world’
I chose a subject matter which is poignant for me now, at this moment in time. I am at a turning point in my life and my memories, my emotions, my state of mind, today, inspire me.
I have always loved the human body having studied classical ballet, dance and theatre. It is the ultimate form for expression.
For me this work is about returning to the basics of the process of art.
